Character Analysis Of 'Jud Crandall In Frankenstein'

Jud Crandall is portrayed in Pet Sematary as a wise old man. Louis even thought that he could have been the father figure he was looking for in life. Jud has a charm about him in the way he speaks and his actions. When he speaks you can tell that behind his thick accent he has knowledge that only comes with age.
These characteristics of Jud are paralleled in a character in Frankenstein. In Frankenstein the character Dr. Waldman shares these characteristics while teaching Victor Frankenstein. While attending his institute Waldman was a key figure in Victor’s life. He taught and guided Victor in his interests. This led to Victor being successful figuring out how to put the spark of life into a decaying body. Jud is just like Dr. Waldman; they both lead the respective parties onwards in their tale.

He asks the family if they’d like to go see where the path takes them, “You still want to see where yon path goes, Ellie?” (page 73). This leads them to finding out that there are beautiful views on their property. It also leads to them finding the pet cemetery. If it were not for Jud, the family might have gone the entirety of their stay in that house without wandering back that far into the woods.
Jud’s main function in the novel is to bring the pet cemetery to the creed family’s attention. It does not appear that he did this with malicious intent. Instead it appears as though he had a secret that not a lot of people knew about and he wanted to use it to help the creed family, “I hope to God I’m doing right. I think I am, but I can’t be sure. Sometimes my head gets muddled.” (page 273). At the start he only shared the pet cemetery and its location with the creed family. There was no reason for him to divulge the land’s true power with them just quite
