Every man and woman wears masks to hide the truth; but who truly has the answers to what their American dream? Within The Great Gatsby no one truly knows who Gatsby is, he remains a man in the shadows to many people who come and go from his life; With the exception of one man, Nick Carraway. Due to the fact the setting takes place in the roaring 20s, Jay’s personality heavily relies on living in extravagance, creating a false personality to the outside people. As Gatsby devotes his years to daisy; he becomes betrayed when she stays with Tom; crushing his dream to have the idealistic american dream.
As the reader starts to learn Gatsby more, they discover many (if not all) of his decisions get decided with Daisy in mind. In the novel after Gatsby leaves for the military and Daisy marries Rom, he spends the next five years devoting himself to her, doing everything imaginable to win her over. Coming to a conclusion on chapter four the connection between the location of Daisy’s and Gatsby’s houses was actually “[not] a coincidence at all” (Fitzgerald 83) That going as far as investing his money to be closer to his dream. When Tom, Daisy, Jordan, and Gatsby all decide to head to New York, Gatsby loses his temper; this is where Daisy begins to trail awal and make her decision against gatsby. After this event occurs, Tom decides to secure his position by ruining Gatsby's reputation. Causing Daisy to feel overwhelmed, essentially ruining Gatsby’s chance to ever get back together with her.
