Fences is a play written by a man named August Wilson in 1985. In Fences there is one character in particular who sticks out and her name is Rose. She is the wife of Troy, the main character in the play. Rose is a caring mother and a loving wife. She was always there for her husband and kids and would do anything for them and that is clearly shown in the play by the way she talks and by her actions. Rose shows the self-control and discipline needed to raise a family in an era of racism and hatred. Troy is an old and grumpy man who still has a lot of hatred from his earlier years when he was abused by his father and when he couldn’t play baseball in the major leagues because he was African-American. Troy treats Rose terribly and degrades Rose by making sexual comments to her throughout the play. Troy makes more sexual comments than loving comments in the play by a landslide. There is no better quality of a mother than to stick up for her kids and believe and encourage them to do what they want too. She showed this throughout the play. She believed that Cory could make his dream of being a football player into a reality despite what Troy said. She also believed that Lyons could be a great musician despite Troy constantly tearing him down. Rose always fought to try to make the best life for her kids and that what is a mother is designed to do.
Rose is very loyal unlike Troy who late in the play reveals to Rose that he has impregnated another woman. After all these years of taking crude comments and trying to love her husband when he made it so hard, she realizes that no matter how hard she tries nothing will ever be good enough for Troy. The mother of the Troy’s new baby dies and the Troy is left all alone with the kid. Rose says, “A motherless child has got a hard time. From right now…this child got a mother. But you a womanless man.” Rose finally sticks up for herself and tells Troy no
