In To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, she uses Tom Robinson to represent a Mockingbird. The “Mockingbirds” in this story represent innocent people. Atticus best explains the innocence of the mockingbirds when he says, “Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but they sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird“ (Lee 10.19) Atticus is saying that the mockingbirds don't cause any harm, they are truly innocent and cause no harm. However, throughout the story the innocent Mockingbirds are exposed to the evils of society. An example of this is when Tom Robinson is convicted with the rape of Miss Ewell. Tom is innocent , but he is a black man in this town during that time period
