Character Analysis: The Book Thief By Markus Zusak

In my opinion in the book The Book Thief by Markus Zusak the characters Liesel and Hans were most affected by the Holocaust. Although Liesel and Hans never had to go to concentration camps, the Holocaust still affected them greatly.
Liesel did all she could to help other Jews that were in worse conditions than she was. “He was a Jew, and if there was one place he was destined to exist, it was a basement or any other hidden venue of survival.” (Zusak, 207) Liesel put her and her families lives at risk when she decides to help out another Jew that was hiding from the Nazi’s, she ends of befriending this Jew. “I have one of you in my basement! “”Mistakes? I’ve made many mistakes in my life, but not joining the Nazi party isn’t one of them. They still have my application – you know that – but I couldn’t go back to ask. I just…” (Zusak, 104) Yes, Hans did send in an application to a part of the Nazi’s but he realized that the Nazi’s are terrible people and is completely against what they do to Jews. “A star the color of mustard was smeared to the door.. In sloppy lettering, the words JEWISH FILFTH were spilling over at their edges” (Zusak, 181) Hans witnessed some guys throw bricks through the window of a Jewish shop and saw them graffiti it. He came back the next day to help repaint the door. “The Jew stood before him, expecting another handful of derision, but he watched with everyone else Hans Hubermann held his hand out and presented a piece of bread, like magic.” (Zusak, 394) Hans saw suffering Jews and instead of just turning the other way he gave one of them food and helped them.
