Is it okay to kill people for a ritual? According to the short story the lottery it's perfectly fine! In the short story, The Lottery, the townspeople kill people as a ritual to help their crops to grow and for the towns population to go down,in order for this to happen the people need to sacrifice someone by stoning them to death. if they chose something different rather than stoning someone to death and did something that the townspeople couldn't all participate in then there would be a slight possibility that the ritual wouldn't workout as planned.
