Valley Forge “The basic of tragedy is man’s helplessness against disease, war and death; the basic of comedy is man’s helplessness against vanity (the vanity of love, greed, lust, and power).” (Powell). It is the winter of 1777, and the cold wind is biting my skin. Here at Valley Forge, 18 miles from Philadelphia, the army is struggling to stay alive. Before us men had to leave our homes and help in the army the Boston Tea party happened in 1773. Later on in 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Now we are here at war with Britain, freezing with barely any food left. Men apostatize because of the hardships here. I have decided to not re-enlist for three reasons which are: health, conditions, and clothing.
