Character Analysis: Wonder By R. J Palacio

In the novel, Wonder by R.J Palacio, 10 year-old August Pullman has a rare facial deformity, causing people to stare or look at him in an unusual manner. He goes to a new school in Manhattan where he experiences the reality of being different in a somewhat normal world. In the novel, Auggie tells about how everyone treats him differently. But regarding that, everyone should treat each other equally no matter what.
To start off, many students at Beecher prep and outside of school judge him and stare at him like if he was a monster. For instance, Jack’s brother, Jamie, ran away when he saw Auggie while getting ice cream. “‘He gave me a nightmare!! Remember, Mommy? That nightmare about the zombies from last year?’. ‘When I saw him, I was like,’Ahh!’ and I ran away….’. ‘Wait a minute’, said Mom, getting serious. ‘Did you do that in front of him?’. ‘I couldn’t help it!’ Said Jamie” (Palacio 140). He won the Henry Ward Beecher medal and everyone starts realizing that he’s smart and very nice, not a student with disabilities. According to the text,”’Will August Pullman please come up here to receive this award?’ ‘Way to go Auggie!’ ‘Nice going, Auggie!’ I even started hearing my name being chanted: ‘Aug-gie! Aug-gie! Aug-gie!’ I felt like I was floating. It was so weird. Like the sun was shining full force on my face on my face and the wind was blowing” (Palacio 304-305). This also provides an example of sensory images. You can imagine everyone clapping and shouting, Aug-gie!, Aug-gie! and the light just shining in your face. You feel weightless, all the weight of your shoulders, no stress, nothing matters, except this moment. You feel special, like you actually accomplished something. Just like you were floating, like Auggie
