Character Changes In The Crucible

A quite frequent incident that occurs throughout a novel or play is when a character might have a change of heart. Usually they start at the beginning having truth in their own beliefs, and by the end that belief has totally changed. Whether it changed because of an event or another character, it still likely is a dramatic one nonetheless. In The Crucible, there are a few characters that have a “change in heart”, each in their own way. One character who has a major breakthrough, and almost completely changes from beginning to end would be Hale. We first meet Hale at the beginning of the play, when he is called down to Salem by Parris to check for witchcraft in the village. Parris’ daughter won’t wake up and everyone has their suspicions. So at the beginning Hale somewhat has a sort of conceited attitude about him. He even says in the play “No, no. Now let me instruct you. We cannot look to superstition in this. The Devil is precise; the marks of his presence are definite as stone, and I must tell you all that I shall not proceed unless you are prepared to believe me if I should find no bruise of hell upon her.” Doris. As he arrives to arrest her, John and Elizabeth both argue and deny the accusation. Hale talks to them and he almost has a turning point, he starts to believe that she is innocent, but he is forced to arrest her anyways. Moving ahead some in the play trials are being held for all of the accused. Innocent people are being hanged, more and more are getting accused and killed. As Hale is witnessing all of the unfair trials he starts to realize what he has gotten into. He starts to notice the inaccurate accusations placed upon the people, and decides that he should do something about them. He often argues with the judge and takes the side of the people being tried.
