"Character is what you are in the dark." This famous statement from Dwight Lyman Moody explains that people are not always who they say that they are, but also that they cannot hide what they are underneath the façade. It also points out that truly strong people can overcome their obstacles because of what they are in their hearts. Marcus Yallow, the protagonist of the book Little Brother, is one such strong person. Marcus has to overcome many challenges, fight back while doing so, and run away from his adversaries.

At first, Marcus seems like a normal kid, doing everyday high school student things. But then, after skipping class to go out with his friends to play a game, his world is flipped upside down. A bombing destroys a bridge and tunnel just a few hundred yards from where he and his friends were standing. The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) starts picking suspicious personnel off the streets to question, and Marcus, along with his friends Darryl and Van, are snagged, tagged and bagged and sent to an island off the coast of California.

They ask him impossible questions that he doesn't know the answer to, and punish him for not knowing the answer. They eventually let him go, but with the promise to bring him back for the same treatment, and worse, if he talks about it to anyone. They release he and his friend Van, but keep Darryl. And so the fight to get Darryl out
