Jon Krakauer uses character motivation to express the characters ambition to successfully summit Mt. Everest. Doug Hansen, the forty-six year old postal worker is full of ambition after, “being within three hundred feet of the summit and then having to turn around the previous year.” This time he was determined to make it, and he did; which cost his and his guide, Rob Hall’s life.
