The Greatest Friend of Gatsby

Although we see Gatsby’s name in the title, we find that Nick Carraway is a very crucial piece to the puzzle when it comes to this story. By this story I mean The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Nick being the narrator of the story, it could be difficult to figure out what his personality is because he hides behind his work. Nick changes quite a bit throughout the course of this novel and with this transformation he inches a little farther into our hearts with every page. Nick Carraway was a great friend to Gatsby, well his only friend actually, which brings us to one of his most important characteristics. He was a very friendly man. Nobody really disliked Nick throughout the entire novel. He made friends and never enemies. Another dominant trait in him is that he is very reserved,

He was in the bond business, which is the reason he came to New York and met Jay Gatsby in the first place. Being in the bond business, because of this people would have thought him to be very charismatic and outgoing, but he is actually very quiet. There are many instances in the book where it probably would have been best for Nick to say no, but he never did. Not being able to say no really goes with the character of Nick Carraway. It goes hand in hand with his other characteristics. At the end of the story after Gatsby has passed, Nick becomes very optimistic. He shows this by saying “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgasmic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter--to-morrow we will run faster and stretch our arms farther” (Fitzgerald 180). Even with this tragedy he is still hopeful that things will still go well. Being as hopeful as he was a huge progression to the story. It was progressive because Nick wanted Gatsby to be happy. Gatsby had spent a majority of his life, and with the help of Nick he gave Gatsby hope as
