The main character Santiago, has gone eighty four days without catching a fish and he is known as the best fisherman in Havana. His reputation is in jeopardy. Also, the young boy, Manolin, is who Santhiago wants to pass on his heritage to before he passes away. However, the boy's parents has stopped him from fishing with Santiago because he has been unlucky fishing. Santiago plans to catch the biggest fish ever by going way out to the Sea.
