“Charles” was a short story with a surprising plot twist ending. “Charles” written by Shirley Jackson was about a young kindergartener in the 1950s named Laurie. Laurie misbehaved because he craved attention from his teacher and his parents. Laurie wanted this attention because he was an older brother to a baby sister. Everyday after kindergarten, Laurie would come home and tell his parents about his classmate, Charles. Laurie struggled with adapting to kindergarten. Laurie’s mother believed that the misbehavior of Laurie was due to the influence of Charles. Laurie’s teacher and parents did not praise Laurie, due to this experience Laurie acted out in school.
