The R Selection Type
Darwin was a British scientist who laid the foundations of the theory of evolution. Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury and died in 1882. Darwin initially planned to follow a medical career; he studied at Edinburgh University but later switched to divinity at Cambridge. In 1831, he joined a five-year scientific expedition on the survey ship HMS Beagle. On the voyage, Darwin read Lyell's 'Principles of Geology’, which suggested that the fossils found in rocks, were actually evidence of animals that had lived many thousands or millions of years ago. Lyell's argument was reinforced in Darwin's own mind by the rich variety of animal life and the geological features he saw during his voyage. Darwin noticed that each island supported its own form of finch, which were closely related but differed in important ways and, by noticing this Darwin made the connection that Lyell’s ideas were right. Influenced by the ideas of Malthus, he proposed a theory of evolution occurring by the process of natural selection. The animals or plants best suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce, passing on the characteristics, which helped them, survive to their offspring. In 1859 Darwin published 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Thomas Malthus was born on February 14, 1766 in Surrey, England; Thomas Malthus was educated at home. His father was a Utopian and a friend of the philosopher David Hume. In 1784 he attended Jesus College and graduated in 1788; in 1791 Thomas Malthus earned his master's degree. Thomas Malthus argued that because of the natural human urge to reproduce human population increases geometrically. Malthus idea was a basic idea that the human population would over grow the food source in the world. The R and K selection is a study of ecology and relates to the selection of traits in an organism that is a trade off between quantity and quality of offspring. R selection produces and abundance of offspring to keep the species alive in a tough environment and takes little effort in making the offspring. The K selection is the inverse of that. The goal of the K selection is to make an improvement of the species and able to adapt to the changing environment. Malthus and Darwin’s ideas are similar to the R and K selection way of living because it is survival of the fittest it also connects to the article More or Less. The Article More or Less discusses the issue between R and K selection between the lower class and upper class. The gap between the upper and lower class keeps increasing because the upper class takes time in their children and does not have so many children they re related to the K selection. The issue with the lower class is there are to many children being born in harsh conditions. Theses conditions limit the ability to overcome their obstacles of poverty. There are to many kids
