The definition of success differs from one person to another. Many people would include wealth and fame in their definition. According to Merriam-Webster, success is defined as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth, fame, or respect.” Technically, those people are not wrong. We all have different meanings of success. Personally, I disagree with defining success as having wealth or fame. Owning that luxury car or the biggest house on the street does not fit in my definition of success. It’s not about being rich. So what is the meaning of success? Success can be broken down into three characteristics: overcoming obstacles to achieve your goal, happiness, and respect. First, achieving your goals is an element of success. Specifically, the key part of achieving your goals is what you went through to obtain it. Charles Lindbergh, an American aviator, once said “Success is not measured by what a man accomplishes, but by the opposition he has encountered and the courage with which he has maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds” (Clemens 1). You cannot feel successful without happiness. For some people, they might say that they are at their happiest peak when they buy luxurious items. However, this not is actually true. Happiness mostly comes from their friends and family. If this is someone’s meaning of success, then their family and friends is what defines their success. You can tie happiness with achieving your goals. If you achieve your goals, but not satisfied with it, then it really isn’t considered as success if you are not happy. Herman Cain, an author, states: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful” (Robinson 1).
