True Grit, by Charles Portis is a story that shows how important honesty and integrity is and how it can effect everyone around you. In this story, a young girl named Mattie seeks to avenge her fathers death, but while doing this she is taken through hostile territory and develops a strong relationship with Marshal Rooster Cogburn. Throughout this story, Portis uses the characters, setting, and events to emphasize how important ones actions and deeds can influence people and the relationship you have with them.
The characters in True Grit contributed to developing a theme by using authentic pioneer gibberish and gestures. For instance, character Rooster Cogburn had some very blunt lines like "I know him well. I shot him in the lip last August
