If you got the chance to triple your I.Q, would you? Charlie Gordon, a 37 year old man got the chance to do just that. But should Charlie take the chance of a lifetime or be safe and not? In the story “Flowers for Algernon” the Science Fiction story by Daniel Keyes, Charlie has an operation done and his I.Q triples from 68 to 204. Charlie has always wanted to be smart like everyone else. After the surgery, Charlie was able to have feelings, real friends and he improved the field of science.
Before the A.I surgery, Charlie wasn’t able to have feelings or any emotions, but after the surgery he was. “I am in love with Miss.Kinnian.” Miss.Kinnian is Charlie’s teacher for his adult night school. (Keyes 234) After the surgery, Charlie was experiencing a lot of new emotions and one of them was love. Charlie was able to have feelings for someone or things around him like nature.
When Charlie’s I.Q was only 68 he had friends but they really weren’t and they bullied him a lot. Charlie was unaware of it. After the surgery, he had true friends and they stuck up for him. “Charlie if anybody bothers you or tries to take advantage you call me or Joe over and we will set em straight.” (Keyes 243) Charlie has friends after the surgery.

Charlie was able to have emotions toward people. He was able to find new friends and change the world of Science. Charlie is like a whole new person after the surgery. “I am glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I never even new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it all for a littel bit.” (Keyes 245) Just because people say you are “not smart” it doesn’t mean that you're not. And if you can’t solve problems or spell as good as other people, doesn’t mean you should give up. You should just try harder! I think Charlie proved that you can do anything as long as you do your
