The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is about a woman who is married to an authoritative, control freak named John. When she becomes ill and depressed, John disregards her condition and forces her to conform to his ideals. The yellow wallpaper in the bedroom bothers her the most and John refuses to get rid of it. Over time as he continues to ignore his wife's concerns, she becomes insane and ultimately tears down the wallpaper. This story was written during a time when women were not respected by men and were viewed as only mothers and wives. It shows the kind world that women had fallen into; being subjective in marriage and being restrained from showing their creative and imaginative side. The Yellow Wallpaper is only one of many literary works that have joined together in the battle to stop these kind of men that make women feel powerless; not only in marriage but in society as well. …show more content…
The wife is in denial about being sick which is why they have moved into the house in the first place so that she could get better. The house is suppose to be a sort of safe haven for her but she does not view it that way, in fact she even asks John if they could relocate to a different house and of course he refuses. By doing this, John reveals to us that he does not care about her opinion and that he doesn't believe she should be giving him ideas of what to do because he is too "dominant" for the opinion of his wife. This is they way men thought during this
