When choosing the best schooling option for their children, parents often wonder which is better: private, charter, or public schools? This is a crucial decision because it can ultimately determine your child's future, like where or if they attend college. Public schools are inexpensive and have many extra curricular activities for students to choose from. Charter schools can offer slightly more advanced curriculum and they are open to the public. Most private schools offer scholarships for students who cannot pay the costly tuition. These scholarships will greatly reduce and in some cases eradicate the tuition entirely if your child qualifies for such a scholarship. Of course, there are always the entrance exams that the student will have to pass to gain acceptance. Private schools often require entrance exams to make sure that the student who wishes to enroll is not behind or would struggle with the higher level of education. It may be difficult for children to pass the entrance exam for private schools because the curricula are generally more advanced then public and charter schools. While this is a valid point for parents wanting to switch their children to more advanced schooling, there is a way to prepare your child for a better chance of acceptance. Students who plan to switch to a private school can talk to a counselor to see what level their peers are on at the private school they want to attend. This way they will recognize what they are expected to know on the entrance exam. Parents may also be concerned with students who have special needs. A common misconception about private schools is that they do not offer these types of programs, however most private schools do. In fact, some private schools are built specifically for children with special needs. For example, Benton Hall Academy is one of many private schools that serves children with disabilities or mental illnesses, like OCD and ADHD.
