In her text, Santha, explains how the perspective people have about a culture can affect how the people within that culture see themselves, and ultimately the world. No matter what a person’s culture is, it will always affect the way he views the world through experiences, traditions, and what he is taught at home. These people might believe that a person’s personality is the only thing that helps shape the way they view the world. Personality traits do play an important role in defining how a person sees the world because they decide how a person acts, and who they hang out with. However, it could be argued that a person’s personality is also influenced by his cultural background. For example, people in the Latin community tend to be more loud and festive than people in other cultures. This is due to their personality and also the culture they grew up in. In Two Kinds, Jing-mei was being forced by her mother to become a prodigy which put her under a lot of pressure to try and become what her mother expected her to be. Many other kids, like Jing-mei, who have immigrant parents go through the same thing because their parents come to America looking for a fresh start and they think that a having a prodigy child will give them just that. However, they do not realize that some kids are not as gifted as others and that they are putting too much pressure on their children.
