In the past, supply chains were less complex. Most supplies were coming from local source or at the very most the other side of the country. Companies would specialize in a small number of products limiting the number of supplies they needed. Today, a single multinational corporation could manufacture thousands of products across hundreds of factories acquiring supplies and raw materials from countries all over the world. The need for supply chain management and database integration became of upmost importance to not only keep all of these factors in check and deliveries on time but also to maintain inventory levels.
The ever expanding need to control a supply chain that is exponentially getting more complex is what drives database systems like SAP or EPIC to get developed. Need is what will eventually drive innovative development. These systems do not specifically cater to supply chain management alone as they too have evolved over time to adapt to almost any corporate need but they are capable of managing a company’s supply chain. In epic for example, you are able to build virtual warehouses and tell the program where every product is on every shelf. Each product has listed how much it costs, who provides that product, and how long it takes to ship to the warehouse. As these materials are used in manufacturing and they begin to get low, the system can automatically order that item from the company that provides it and have it shipped to your warehouse before it stocks out. That is obviously a simplified version of how a company can use a program like EPIC as it
