An experience that is impacting me greatly is my high school senior project. For the past 4 months I have been coaching children, ages 7-9, for a cheer team at my competitive cheerleading gym.

My coach and I spend hours each week teaching children a competitive cheer routine for this season’s competitions. I thoroughly enjoy teaching the kids stunts, gymnastics and dance moves, and perfecting their routines. The girls on this team showed extreme excitement while they were learning parts of their routine. At times the process can be stressful, but seeing the smiles on their faces after they have perfected a routine makes it all worth it. I started pursuing gymnastics when I was around their age, and I aspired to be just like my coach. I love my cheerleading coaches and for all that they do, and it feels right to give back.

I enjoy being a mentor to the girl‘s team, and I am touched at how the children look to me as a role model. I try my best to make every student know their value to the team and to their teammates. I want them to enjoy practice, to have fun, and to know what it is like to be a part of a team. I would love to see all of them pursue and fulfill their dreams as I have, not only in competitive cheerleading, but also in life.

Competitive cheerleading is one of my greatest passions in life. It has taught me how to deal with my feelings and emotions, and without it, parts of life would have been harder to cope with. My coach, my teammates, and the routines have changed my life in such positive ways, and has made me the person I am today.
