Cheerleading Observation Paper

For the coaching observation, I observed a Varsity Cheerleading team at Plymouth High School, coached by Samantha Kerr. These cheerleaders were Varsity level, ranging from 14-18 year olds, and a mix of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. I was never a cheerleader, nor have I ever sought out to be one, but its good to get a different perspective on a sport that you wouldn’t ever get to see up close and see the coaching styles of the sport itself. The practice I observed was one where there was a lot of gymnastics, and there were a lot of backhand springs, flips, and round-offs, where the coach critiqued on a variety of movements. Cheerleading is more about team than individual; you need to be in-sync, and trusting of your teammates. From what I saw, the girls were very attentive to their teammates, cheered them on, and came together to perform. The practice and game situations were very different. Practice was more critiquing on certain movements, working on flying and stunt work, and commenting on things that should be improved upon or need to change completely. Like I said before, practice was a lot of gymnastics, which means stunting, flipping, and flying in the air. It was very technical, which made the coach more focused on the movements and ready to critique on little things to prevent injury of any sort. The game situation was a lot of cheering for the football players and getting the crowd pumped up. Coach Sam called all the cheers, had to keep control of the team while still looking for smiles, positivity, and yelling to help cheer on their football team.
