Cherry Valance and Ponyboy Curtis are possibly the most different characters when you first meet them, one being a Soc and one being a greaser… But, they’re also more similar to each other than one may think. In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting two characters in The Outsiders, Cherry Valance and Ponyboy Curtis. Many people don’t realise how similar these two characters may be, all they see is how different they are.

They differ by many things…
For starters, one is a girl, and one is a boy.
One is a Greaser, one is a Soc.
One is sixteen, one is fourteen.

Being a Soc and a Greaser prove many things…
Being a Greaser means that you’re poor… Being a Soc means that you’re rich.

Being a greaser would mean that a person was bound for dirty looks, people being reluctant to serve you at diners, movie theatres, stores, anywhere, really… There was always that nagging feeling as if a greaser would steal something (most greasers did steal stuff), try to mess with people, cause trouble.

The person wouldn’t be given skeptical looks, they’d be trusted to buy things with actual money, they fit in more with society, and people loved them.

Ponyboy and Cherry were also similar for a few reasons…
One was that they both enjoyed sunsets…
In chapter three, when Ponyboy is walking to Two-Bit’s house with Cherry, they discover that they both enjoy looking at the sunsets in the evening.
And, later on in the book, when Johnny is in the hospital, Ponyboy asks Cherry if she could see the sunset real good from her side of the town…
There, he’s reminding her that they’re always seeing the same sunsets…

Another difference is the groups they decide to hang out
