The Jamestown colony was settled on May 14, 1607 on a peninsula about 60 miles from the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. They named it Jamestown in honor of King James I of England. The region of what is now Virginia that they settled in was ruled by a powerful Indian chief named Powhatan. His domain included more than 30 tribes with about 15,000 people. Soon the new colony suffered from a combination of disease, bad drinking water, poor diet and Indian attacks. After the first year more than half of the colonists perished. But the following year the colony was reinforced by more settlers and fresh supplies. Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay region. He took over leadership of the colony in September. He urged the colonists to stop
