On December 20th, 1606, three ships named Sarah Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed set sail in hopes of claiming land and gold for England. Captain Christopher Newport led these ships full of English settlers across the Atlantic, and arrived on the shores of Chesapeake Bay on April 26th, 1607. The English settlers were delighted with the abundant supply of fresh water and tall trees surrounding the area. However, the settlers had instructions not to settle near the coast, because they would face the risk of falling victim to the Spaniards. So, instead they entered a stream called the Powhatan River and made their way up into the country of Virginia. Upon further exploring, the settlers found a peninsula in the river that was convenient and easy to defend against the Spaniards. The English saw no more Indians for four days, however they were still being watched by the Chesapeake’s and the Powhatan’s people. On April 30th, the Englishmen landed on Kecoughtan territory, where they met a much friendlier man named Pochis, son of Powhatan. Pochis had orders from his father to gain information about the weaponry the settlers possessed, and in regards to what plans the newcomers may have with the land.
On May 4th, 1607, Wowinchopunk, the king of the Paspaheghs; was warned of the arrival of three great ships in Chesapeake Bay. The Indian tribe was startled by the white men settling on Pasphegh territory. Wowinchopunk chose to arrange a meeting with these strangers and provide them with a feast.
