He was also known as Joseph. His name Joseph had come from his father,which was also named Joseph. His Native American name translates to Thunder Rolling Down a Mountain in English.

During his early life Joseph's father had died.This meant that he would become the leader of the Native American Nez Perce tribe. He had many problems that his father had left him to deal with. One of the problems was that whites kept coming and attacking his land. The whites were attacking them because they had found out there was gold in the Nez Perce territory. He
