Chief Wilma Mankiller is a strong woman who made her way to the top despite the difficulties that she went through. Mankiller was raised in a poor, large family who lived in a big farm in Oklahoma. In 1959 when Mankiller and her family moved in San Francisco, Mankiller started her junior year there and disliked the fact that kids at school would tease her about her name and her being a Native American. After years of unhappiness, she finally builds her confidence when she moved in with her maternal grandmother and decided to involve in the world Indian center.
