After reading the book Precious by Sapphire I was able to relate it to all the topics we learned in class. Claireece Precious Jones story is very sad and she needed a lot of help with her dysfunctional family. Her father sexually abused her and got her pregnant twice. Precious’ mother saw that her father would sexually abuse her and she wouldn’t do anything to stop it. Precious’ mother also abused her daughter both sexually, physically, and emotionally. In class we learned that these are the three types of child abuse. In the novel, Precious’ mother demonstrates learned helplessness. In the institution Precious build friendships with the other students and they formed an emotional support. While I was reading the story it felt like Each One Teach One was like a counseling session, school, counselors, and brokers. Ms. Rain would make them get introduce each other and explain why they are there. They would write in their journals so they can reflect on what is happening and she would respond back. Ms. Rain also worked as a “broker” for Precious because she helped Precious find a place to live when Precious’ mother tried to practically kill her for confessing to the Welfare what she was doing. Precious got placed in a halfway house where they also had a daycare for Abdul. This way Precious is able to keep attending school and get her GED so she can later on get a job, support for Abdul, and go to college. The whole story involved all types of the human service network; there was housing, child care, health, legal services, and welfare. In the story Precious contracted HIV from her father. When Precious found out that she got HIV from her father she was sad and upset. A classmate convinced Precious to accompany her to an incest support
