In the early 1900’s it was extremely common for children ages 6 and older to be to working in mills and mines in order to try and raise some money for their families. However, the amount that those children had to sacrifice for this extra income was more than just loss of energy, the consequences ranged from them having to drop out of school due to lack of energy/sleep, all the way to them losing limbs after an accident. Lewis Wickes Hine, born in September 6th, 1874, is well known for the many great deeds he did to improve the lives of Americans using only his camera and little notebook. However, the main reason why people today may recognize Lewis Hine is due to the fact that he travelled approximately 100,000 miles across the United State, and photographed about 5000 photos of child labor across the states (Burgan). The photos that Lewis Hine took and the further push that he made for a change in child labor laws were caused by a couple of factors.
