While working at my part-time job, I thought about what to write about myself in my personal essay. What do I want the committee to think about me? What don’t I want the committee to think about me? Either way, you will have your thoughts and opinions about me; I am hoping for the best, but also preparing myself for the multiple different outcomes that may not be in my favor. No matter what the outcome will be, I will not let it define my whole being. This is my story. I was raised by single mother who worked long hours at multiple different jobs, so she could afford to send me to private schools. These private schools were not meant to make sure that I would be accepted into Ivy League universities, but rather to help me overcome my learning differences. At a young age, I was diagnosed with both dyslexia and apraxia of the speech. Dyslexia is commonly referred to as a language-based learning disability which translates to the difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is an uncommon speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to make accurate movements when speaking. If I did not work hard, I would not have been given the opportunity to spend my freshman year of college studying abroad in Jakarta, Indonesia through the Honors College from which I did my dual credit during high school. I was able to continue my studies for my Associates of Arts degree, along with traveling to other high schools and colleges to educate them both on dual credit and community college tracks but also teach them about American culture.
