The issue of children in the media and more importantly the sexualisation of children in the media is becoming of high importance in today’s society and the government, the public and the media all have varying ways of dealing with this issue.
The website ‘Kids free 2B Kids’ defines sexualisation as exposing children to inappropriate sexualized imagery in a bid to sell products and make a profit. The website also defines direct sexualisation as how children are being portrayed or presented in advertising and in media forms such as tv shows and magazines. Dr Sloan Madden from Westmead’s Children Hospital has found that 1/3 of 8 years old are not happy with their weight and shape and ¼ are dieting. As a group, we found the issue of children in the media very alarming as it becoming a huge part of today’s society and we thought that investigating it will give us a greater understanding of how the government, the public and the media are all dealing with this issue. The media is growing constantly and is so broad that anyone can access it and children are growing up reading magazines and viewing tv shows that can portray girls and boys in a sexualized way which then results in these children aiming to be like their ‘role models’. * * * Through investigating this issue we have found out how alarming the statistics are about children in the media and we found it alarming because children are being born into the media and it plays a huge role in every child’s life.
