China’s One Child Policy
The one child policy was designed in such a way that will lead to one generation policy. A campaign similar to any political campaign was started across the China the motive of this campaign was later marriage with longer birth gaps and fewer number of children which is to be brought about by contraceptive technologies. One couple once child slogan was raised in the mass mobilization campaign and different instruments were used to enforce this policy. This policy was fairly welcomed in the urban areas but there was some difficulty in rural areas. This policy was modified in different circumstances back in 1980. The aims of this policy is now seemed to be achieved as today actual fertility is the policy fertility. Questions were raised that if the fertility increases in the absence of one child policy? A survey done in Shanghai answers this question that there would be increase in the fertility and is suspected to population expansion.
The mass mobilization campaign was associated with the political campaigns and in these campaigns the slogans of gang of four destroying the family planning were raised and this has a huge impact in adopting the one child policy. Although this policy came in 1979 but many families were practicing this one child policy and they were effectively controlling fertility rate. But the main reason for this one child policy was the social factors. These are decisive in one child policy making because it was feared that rapid population growth will lower the living standards. The one child policy averted over 400 million births and it is against the easing of policy. These were some arguments raised for and against the ease of policy. Those who favors the easing of policy says that this policy has causing the decrease in number of labors and workers and also the children for the older parents which is both socially and economically devastating. While those who are against this call to ease the policy says that it will cause the rebound increase of fertility and the bureaucracy will lose its authority.
This policy had great consequences in achieving the control on the rapid population expansion in China. As the couples were married in the later ages who follows this one child policy and have reduced the fertility rate. There were some modifications done in short times in this rule to accommodate the local conditions and the most important of these was opening small holes to close big holes in 1980-84. In this family planning and political, ethnicity, economic demographic all the aspects were looked after. There were voice raised in favor of easing this policy that this policy is becoming backdrop in the social and economic development. There were estimates made regarding the relaxation of policy and a survey conducted in Shanghai which shows the results that the mean number of children will be 1.25 if everybody achieve the policy and there is a difference of about 10% when the policy is relaxed.
