Imagine you live in China getting ready to have a child and you have to decide if you want to keep your daughter or your family’s name alive. In 1949 China was taken over by Mao Zedong and made China a communist nation. Mao Zedong at first wanted China to be a strong nation full of people and promoted not using birth control.Mao Zedong wanted a Great Leap forward. He later realized his mistakes and promoted the slogan “Late, Long, and Few” which later just became the One-Child Policy. China’s One-Child Policy was a bad idea for multiple reasons such as the social abnormalities and population problems. The One-Child policy tried to cut the population quick causing an age gap between the elderly and youth. The one child policy seemed like a good idea at first by trying to rapidly reduce the population of china. In China during 2010 its population was 1350 million while the United States was just under 300 million people. The One-Child policy was even questioned for its necessity because fertility reduction, halved the of children per woman from 5.8 in 1970 to 2.7 in 1979. This causing less workers and more retirees. In 2007 there were six workers for every retiree. This would also impact farmers by them only having one child they would not get enough help. Making most farmers leave their jobs to pursue something else for work. If citizens decided they wanted to have more than one child they would either get a permit or pay a great fine. If they could not do either one they would be forced to have an abortion or be sterilized.
