Americans passed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 because the Chinese were taking over their jobs. The Chinese immigrated to America because they were helping to build railroads, specifically the Transcontinental Railroad. The building of the railroads brought a large amount of Chinese to America, the railroads depended on the labor of thousands of Chinese workers. As more and more Chinese came, less work became available for Americans. Bosses would mostly go towards hiring Chinese because they were hard workers. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, prevented the migration of Chinese immigrants from coming to the US. Americans passed the CEA because they were taking jobs away from them. Looking at, “The Chinese Must Go”, an anti-Chinese play, a white man portraying a Chinese man named Ah Coy states, “Chinaman plenty work, plenty money, plenty to eat. White man no work, no money, die- sabee?” (Grimm A). What his character is trying to state is that, because of the migration of thousands of Chinese, there has been less work available for the white men. As a result of that, they end up having no money and eventually end up dying because of it. Ah Coy presented the Chinese as people who have plenty of everything such as money, food etc; so he wants to make the audience believe that it was the Chinese fault that Americans are “suffering” of not having jobs because of the migration. He wants to justify the reason as to why the Americans are not having as many jobs or money which makes others believe that it was the Chinese fault and later advocate for the Exclusion Act.
