I hope everyone can do basic math.” Dev shuffled the cards again, “I deal first, then it moves to the left on the next hand, and so-on. Let’s start. Everyone ante up” A small bet to start the chip pot, called the ante needed to go in the middle pot.

Antes on the cards ended, and he dealt everyone two cards. France to Dev’s left, bet first based on the two cards dealt to him. He checked, Tim came next and bet the minimum, then Dev‘s called the bet, and France needed to meet the bet, or fold, he met it and called.

The conversation veered from the creature. Kiley never suspected the yellow glow came from a huge eye trained on her. Ares’ stomach churned and she slid into her seat. The creature ran off somewhere. With a glance out the back window, she watched the barn recede into the distance. The bus continued at a slow speed, still down-geared, as if the road became sticky instead of wet.

She gave up and turned a bit to the front, but then a movement on top the barn snared her attention. Ares squinted her eyes and shapes materialized.

Three girls dressed in tight dark gray clothes stood on the barn roof. They wore dark belts and black combat boots. Each one collapsed into a crouched, as if to avoid detection.

More motion at the ground showed a boy. He relaxed against the barn wall. From that distance, it looked like he held a tablet in his hands. The girls on the roof stood, looked to their left, and jumped to the ground with a roll into a sprint back behind the barn. The boy left by the time Ares zoomed back to where he stood.

They vanished. Ares turned to see if anyone else noticed them, but the other students’ attention focused on their discussions and the poker game. The bus picked up speed with a change of
