The Curious Case of Chivalry Chivalry was once the system of values (such as loyalty and honor) that knights in the Middle Ages were expected to follow. Today, chivalry is an honorable and polite way of behaving, especially towards women (Merriam Webster 1). Interpretations of chivalry have become skewed over time due social and media advances causing disconnect between men and women. Chivalry is considered dead in our society. The idea of “equal sexes” and no sexual discrimination has resulted in mixed signals from both parties causing genders to power clash and not see eye to eye regarding polite gestures.

In a recent study, only one in seven men will offer their seat to a woman on a train or a bus (De Lacey 1). The reasoning that this percentage is so low is that men are afraid of offending women and being accused of patronizing. However, some factors that may not have been taken into account were rude men who were unwilling to give up their seat or men who have just been brought up without manner, which is a common occurrence in this generation. The fact that an act of generosity is embarrassing or insulting towards another individual will forever be beyond me, no matter who is a part of the situation. It is also hard to believe that so many men and women have been brought up without the right morals and manners to allow an elderly man or woman or a woman carrying a child to take their seats on a bus or a train. Chivalry should not be simply men being generous to women but a society acting selflessly to create a caring culture for all of those who are a part of
