Hey guys, my name is Michelle, and today I am going to demonstrate how to make America’s beloved chocolate chip cookies. It’s Christmas time and what better time is it than to make a family fun dessert? Nothing beats a homemade chocolate chip cookie with a cold glass of milk. These are always a crowd pleaser. Over the years I have tried several chocolate chip cookie recipes. However, I always seem to come back to the true Nestle Toll House cookie recipe listed on the back of the chocolate chip bag. This is the original and very first recipe for the chocolate chip cookie from 1937. They are great for an after school snack or for a late night treat. First, I will discuss the history and background of this yummy delight. Most people are unaware that the chocolate chip discovery was an accident. It was discovered in a small country inn in Whitman, Massachusetts by Ruth Graves Wakefield. According to a magazine called The Nibble, Ruth and her husband Kenneth’s inn had served as a stop for travelers in Colonial times: where travelers could pay their road toll, changed horses and dined.” Ruth regularly cooked for her guests. Her desserts were very popular, especially her Butter Drop Do cookies. Noted on the Forbes website, one day Ruth chopped up and stirred in semi-sweet morsels that had been given to her as a gift by Thomas Nestle and used them in her Butter Drop Do cookie recipe since she had run out of baker’s chocolate (Forbes). The morsels did not melt like she expected but instead softened and retained its shape, fortunately this gave birth to what we know as the chocolate chip cookie. According to Facts About Chocolate, “the cookie has gone on to become the most popular cookie worldwide, and the official cookie of its home state, Massachusetts.” The cookies not only became a huge hit with the guests back in the 1930’s, but eventually went on to become a worldwide phenomenon for 75 years.
