Choosing In Edward Bloor's Tangerine

Choosing can be hard sometimes, so people need to fully think about what they are about to choose. In the book Tangerine by Edward Bloor, Paul Fisher is a middle schooler that moves from Houston, Texas to Tangerine, Florida with his family. In Texas a catastrophe happens to Paul that messes up his eyes, but he does not find out what really happened until several years later. Moving to Florida opens up many more decisions that Paul has to make. The choices Paul makes and the consequences of these choices, switching schools, working in the tangerine groves, and standing up to Erik, affect the development of his character. To begin, Paul’s first middle school that he goes to is Lake Windsor Middle School, but some incidents happen that lead him to switch schools and go to Tangerine Middle School. Paul’s friend, Tino, has a brother that owns tangerine groves and during the freeze most people take care of the trees, so that they do not die from the cold. Paul chooses to help his friend Tino to try it out and to show dedication that he really wants to be friends with them. Working in the groves makes Paul realize how fancy his life is and how he does not have to work hard for anything . It also opens up another side of life to him and not just the fancy, arrogant people. For example, “Every tree tripped frozen icicles, from the top down to the ground. And the glow of all of them together was more beautiful than anything I have ever seen”(225-226). Paul really likes his experience in the groves, so he is always welcome back to work in the groves; When helping out Luis, Paul would never shirk his duties.
