Why did he do it? Was he okay with dying like that? Why the wilderness? These are questions that were asked by his family and friends. We will never really know the real reason as to why Chris McCandless decided to leave society and venture off into the wilderness, but we are able come up with conclusions as we review his life.
Chris McCandless was born on February 12,1968 in El Segundo,CA. His parents were Billing and Walt McCandless. Now Chris had a childhood that was somewhat different than others but not in a bad way. He was extremely intelligent, and was accepted into programs that were for kids similar to him. Later on during high school, he excelled in music and cross country. He ended up quitting music because his sister was better than him and he didn't want competing to ruin them. He excelled in cross country and had begun to make a name for himself. Chris wasn't very social, but that didn't bother him just because he didn't feel the need to constantly be surrounded by people. He had worked in numerous businesses and people, and on had actually offered to pay for his college education, but refused for he wanted to be independent. He then went on to excel in college. He had been to many places that weren't amusement parks or museums that other people would consider a vacation, but literally would go hiking, climbing, or just to go walk in the woods. Chris would always look forward to these trip, and I believe that it was because this was his form of escape. My belief is that Chris went into the wild because he felt like he connected more with solitude and nature than his old life. Yes Alex did make many new friends that quickly connected with him, but even at that , he kept them at arm's length. This was somewhat of an escape for Chris, and a new beginning for
