Maggots writhed in the spoiled moose meat as Christopher McCandless realized that he had wasted many pounds of meat on his journey for self-content. Before passing away alone and hungry, Chris had set out on a journey to find happiness and find who he was as a person, along the way. He was a curious boy eager to discover himself. Chris was definitely not crazy, but rather he made many stupid, irrational decisions. One of Christopher McCandless’ biggest mistakes was going into the Alaskan wild unprepared. Chris went into the wild with “the only food in his pack [being] a ten-pound bag of rice” (Krakauer 5). This decision to bring only ten pounds of rice with him ultimately cost him his life. Along with minimal amounts of food, Christopher also brought gear that was not suited for his journey. The small .22 caliber rifle he brought was “too small to rely on if he expected to kill large animals like moose and caribou, which he would have to eat if he hoped to remain very long in the country” (Krakauer 5). Also, “he had no ax, no bug dope, no snowshoes, no compass” (Krakauer 6). Saying that Chris made the irrational decision of going into the wild unprepared is an understatement.

He was very emotional (pathos) when it came to his sister Carine. “…he never said much about any of them except Carine, his little sister. He said they were pretty close” (Krakauer 63). He loved animals, like most people do. “But in truth he was real good with dogs” (Krakauer 45). Chris went to college to get an education, like the average high-school graduate. “I have a college education. I’m not destitute” (Krakauer 51).
