To me, Chris McCandless represents the flip-flops up there. He is open to the world to try new things by going into the wilderness and living out there over a period of time and he is also unprepared for what the uninhabited has to offer for him.. On page 4 Jim Gallien says “they’ll pick up a copy of Alaska magazine, thumb through it, get to thinkin’ ‘Hey, I’m goin’ to get on up there, live off the land, go claim me a piece of the good life.’ But when they get here and actually head out into the bush--well, it isn't like the magazines make it out to be.” This wasn’t a line from McCandless but it explains a lot that McCandless probably thought when going out there. Which he didn’t. McCandless was just a guy seeking for something new and refreshing
