A well-educated young man by the name of Chris McCandless who had passed away in the Alaskan wilderness has Stunned many American’s and has left a big debate of whether he truly was one with nature or just a kid who had run from his problems. Chris had problems conforming to society because he just didn’t want to follow in others footsteps and be told what to do with his life. Some say that Chris wasn’t completely transandental because he wasn’t self-reliant in some ways. Chris died the way he lived doing what he wanted to by being free in his own way. "Running away from your problems is a race you will never win"

Self-Reliance is in one of those grey areas for Transcendentalism, it’s about relying on yourself instead of others. Chris McCandless frequently hitchhiked across the U.S relying on others as a form of transportation and also lives with multiple groups of people, he has shown how he don’t like to take others money without working for them but that means he still uses the government for resources, thus he kind of relies on the government. Chris didn’t have to start a new, if he had followed conformity he could still be free to do as he pleases along and it was in the law. Chris could have gone to Alaska and still have kept his identity and if he didn’t run away he might still be alive. Nature may be a harsh thing to many but for some it’s the only escape from modern society, to break chains and be free is a dream for some people but people don’t always realize to price of being
