Chris Rock is a very controversial comic that has been the topic of conversation in recent months and years. In 2014 Kelefa Sanneh wrote an in-depth piece within The New Yorker that talked about Rock the actor, the man and his opinions on many different topics. This is an example of a long form story that has feature and news elements at the same time. The lead in this piece is not direct. Instead, it is a personal look directly at Rock’s current position and presents the problem of whether or not he is going to be able to make the transition from comedian to someone that can be considered a leading actor. That was the struggle that Rock was going through in 2014 and in some ways he’s still going through it in 2016. In one angle, there is the argument that the writer is not successfully making an argument or presenting anything educational or informative. However, on the other side of the coin is the idea that the author is presenting information about how difficult it is for Rock to grow from an offensive and marginalized comic into a face that movies can be built upon. It’s a difficult stretch for any actor to make however one who has had the career that Rock has enjoyed; it’s that much more difficult.
