Christopher Boone Character Analysis

Nature can decide the characteristics of a person but, nurture can decide

how a person leads their life and develops. The protagonist in this book is

Christopher Boone, a fifteen-year-old boy who has autism. His autism leads to

behavioral issues, social skills, and communication skills. Although he has these

disorders, Christopher is a brilliant kid, who’s honest and is picky about how

things are done. Due to his great intelligence, Christopher, is able to overcome his

setbacks and disorders. Conflict is constant in Christopher’s life as he lives with his

father. Some of the conflicts he has been oblivious to, changes his life.

Another example is when he is in the subway station and

threatens to pull his Swiss army knife on a person who was trying to help him

(Pg.184). His longing for alone time and no to communication with strangers is

explained by saying all people are incompetent and filled their heads with

unimportant subjects (Pg.144). Christopher’s disability makes him seem to society as

“not normal”.

With so much conflict going on Christopher decides to write a book. One of

the most nurturing characters in the creating of this book is Siobhan. Siobhan is

Christopher’s primary school teacher. She helps Christopher with his social skills and

the one person that understands him. Christopher’s parents haven’t really helped him,

mostly hitting him, lying to him, abandoning him, and verbally abusing him. An

example of this neglect is when Christopher finds out that his father has kept

letters sent from his presumed dead mother (Pg.97). This also includes the multiple

times Christopher’s parents have yelled at him and hit him. On one occasion

Christopher’s father having hit him and saying, “Come on. You’re the f**g memory

man”, this was his response to the writing of Christopher’s book
