Christopher Columbus- He was to the first to publicize his findings of the New World and began the culture of cruelty towards the Native peoples, whom he called “Indians.” Arawak People- This was the first peoples who greeted Christopher Columbus, and would later become essentially extinct by the maltreatment Columbus instituted. Rodrigo- This crew member of Columbus was the first European to actually see the Caribbean, yet Columbus stole his pension for his deed. Bartolomé de Las Casas- This priest advocated for the Natives to be set free from the encomienda system, and argued Africans should be brought to the New World to take place of the Natives. Hernando Cortés- He went to the Aztec empire for the sole mission of finding gold and in the end took control of the Aztec empire after fooling its leader into giving him a majority of its riches and wiping entire towns Montezuma- He was the leader of the Aztec empire who mistakenly welcomed Cortés into his empire with gold and riches, as he believed he was the Francisco Pizarro- He is the man who conquered …show more content…
The European expansion- This helps me understand the feelings of excitement and inquiry the European states had with the prospect of making money from trade. It demonstrates to me much change and discovery was happening at this time. Columbus’ goldfield quotas- This demonstrates the European feelings of superiority and power over anyone they thought to be inferior. Furthermore, this demonstrates how the Native peoples weren’t believed to be humans, similar to the African peoples, and how racial differences were such prevalent aspects of life during this time period. Powhatan’s plea- This Native American’s plea for European unification demonstrates the obvious tensions between these peoples and how peace was the ultimate desire for the Natives.
