A Single Man is one of the greatest pieces of literature to come out of the 1960’s, and it was created by one of the most innovative and brilliant writers of the 1900’s, Christopher Isherwood. Christopher Isherwood lived a very full and exciting life, though at times there were also some hardships. From his earlier works and his escape from the Nazis, to his later love life and his more successful works, Christopher Isherwood worked his way through a life of hard times to come back to be a successful and well known literary genius. Christopher Isherwood was born in 1904 in England and was born into a very well to do family as an heir to a country squire. Before dedicating his life to his novels, Isherwood dabbled in a part-time job as a private tutor, and had a brief period in medical school. During this time Isherwood would begin work on his first two novels, All the Conspirators in 1928 and The Memorial in 1932. Isherwood would also look for a life of peace and passivity, and would eventually join the Ramakrishna monk and devote his life to Hinduism. Isherwood would finally write his first movie writing in London in the early 1930’s, during which he would become enamored with the Viennese director Berthold Viertel, with whom Isherwood would have a very intimate relationship with. However there was a great deal of tension in Isherwood’s and Viertel’s relationship, as Viertel struggled with his own life and various affairs with other men. This caused a great deal of depression and loneliness for Isherwood and would almost end Isherwood’s and Viertel’s relationship.
