In every country, state, town, village, etc there is some type of an authority figures, for example a police officer, a manager, a teacher, and lawyers. All of these authoritarian figures are looked up by the community to seek guidance, leadership, and security. What can be considered “a great leader” is an individual who stays concerned of the health of his/ her people before their own and has a passionate commitment to their job. They take actions into their own hand when there is a moral crisis at hand and belief justice should always be made. These characteristics that have been described can be in very much contrast to the authority figures portrayed in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold. When a system of government of the police department is uninvolved and ineffective, no progress is made to help progress and make a country, state, or town a better and safe place. In Chronicle of Death Foretold, Marquez talks about the irony within the legal system to demonstrate the idea of how uninvolved and ineffective the leaders are within the community of Colombia. As an authority figure, it is important to always be involved and know what is going on in that community. The lack of involvement can portray an individual as selfish who only cares about the power. An example of this is when Marquez starts his novel by describing how the townspeople were getting prepared for the arrival of the bishop.
