We almost put ourselves in God’s place and make ourselves into a god.

Yes, when we were babies, it did seem like everything revolved around us, but as we grow and mature, we need to grow out of our selfish ways of relating to the world.

Becoming a Christian involves exchanging a self-centered world for a Christ-centered world. This leaves little room for self-pity, self-importance, self-righteousness.

Rather, we start to see people with new eyes. We identify with other’s feelings, and we care for others as we would for ourselves.

Look at the first letter of each obstacle. They spell SIN backwards. Sin is putting life together in a way that doesn’t work, that stops real growth and real happiness.

Though we struggle with these obstacles to grow in Christ, the good news is that God will sustain us despite our sin.

The grace in God is greater than the sin in us (Romans 5:20-21). God enables our daily dying with Christ (to unbelief, idolatry, self-centeredness) and daily rising with Christ (to faith, hope, love, life in Christ.) And this is how we can overcome sin and obstacles to growth in our lives.

1. Go to God. Let go of pride that keep you from turning to God. Let go of “I am unworthy” speeches. Ask God for the help you need. Be honest with God about the obstacles to your relationship with God. Admit the ways sin and selfishness is taking form in you. God is full of grace to accept, forgive and heal.
